How to dehydrate Onions?

Have your onions become mushy? Dehydrating onions makes them last longer in food storage. Make dehydrated onion flakes, minced dry onions, and onion powder using your onions.

I raise a lot of storage onions that I store in the winter in my cold basement. We don’t always use them entirely before they start to soften. The good news is that you can extend the life of onions by dehydrating them before they deteriorate.

Making Dehydrated Onions: A Step-by-Step Guide

Red, white, and yellow onions can all be dehydrated. Wear gloves and eye protection if you’re cutting onions by hand to avoid inhaling the intense onion odor.

Step 1: Get your onions ready.

Remove the onion skins, trim the ends, and cut the onion into uniform slices. I prefer to split the onions and then slice each half into 1/4-inch pieces. To speed up the process, I sometimes use the slicing blade on my food processor.

The onions can be any shape as long as they are all roughly the same size to ensure equal drying. Cut the onions into rings, pieces, or whichever shape is convenient for you. Simply keep the chunks large enough to avoid falling through the dehydrator’s screens.

Step 2: Place the onions on the dehydrating screens and spread them out evenly.

Separate the onion segments and place them on the dehydrator tray in a uniform layer. The onion slices should be able to touch, but not overlap, or they will not dehydrate uniformly.

Step 3: Pat the onions dry.

Dehydrate for 3 to 9 hours at 125°F until totally dry, depending on the size of your pieces and the moisture level of your onions. It’s fine to turn off the dehydrator and then turn it back on the next day. Follow your dehydrator’s directions.

Rotate the trays to ensure that the onions dry evenly. When you break the dried onions, they should be crisp and snap.

Step 4: Put your dried onions in a container and store them.

After dehydrating the onions, allow them to cool before crushing them into onion flakes with your hands or a mallet and storing them in airtight glass containers.

The jars of dried onion flakes should be labelled, dated, and kept in a dark, cool place. In a few days, check the jars to make sure there isn’t any moisture on the glass.

I fill small jars for my spice cabinet, and the remainder of the dried onions are stored in mason jars in my basement food storage space. Onions that have been properly dehydrated will not spoil, although their flavour will deteriorate over time.
